1Kosmos is seeking a Senior Database Engineer to own the day-to-day operations of their production database estate. The role is operations-first, focused on keeping MongoDB, Amazon DocumentDB, PostgreSQL, DynamoDB, and Amazon Redshift healthy and performant. You will work alongside a senior database architect who leads data platform projects, while you take full ownership of run work—pre-deployment migrations, upgrades, query performance optimization, customer data requests, backup and recovery, and incident response. This is an on-call position.
Key responsibilities include:
- Own day-to-day operations across MongoDB, DocumentDB, PostgreSQL, DynamoDB, and Redshift (health checks, capacity, connections, storage growth)
- Plan and execute database version upgrades, assessing driver compatibility and query behavior changes before production deployment
- Profile workloads, read explain plans, and optimize slow queries through index design and tuning
- Run pre-deployment schema and data migrations with pre-checks, verification, and tested rollbacks
- Manage versioned database migrations in Git (Liquibase, Flyway) reviewed through pull requests and applied via CI/GitHub Actions
- Handle customer data requests (extracts, reports, corrections, deletions) with proper approvals and audit trails
- Maintain reporting access in Redshift over Iceberg tables on S3, including external schemas, Spectrum, and Glue Data Catalog
- Own backup, point-in-time restore, and failover procedures; rehearse restores regularly and document runbooks
- Manage database access (users, roles, grants, secrets rotation, access reviews) to support SOC 2 and ISO 27001 compliance
- Build and tune monitoring and alerting for query latency, replication lag, disk, connections, and cost
- Lead database incident response and root-cause analysis
- Automate repetitive DBA work with Python or Bash to reduce operational load
- Collaborate with Development, Customer Success, ML, and DevSecOps teams on releases and escalations
- Participate in on-call rotation
The company develops advanced authentication solutions for identity security and passwordless innovation, trusted by leading global brands.
Requirements:
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field (or equivalent experience)
- 5+ years administering production databases
- Hands-on production experience with MongoDB or Amazon DocumentDB (replica sets, indexing, TTL, upgrades)
- Hands-on production experience with PostgreSQL
- Strong SQL and experience with Amazon Redshift or comparable analytical query engine (Athena, Trino, Snowflake, BigQuery)
- Track record of production database upgrades with application impact assessment
- Index design and query tuning driven by profiler and explain plan analysis
- Experience running schema and data migrations as part of release processes
- Backup, restore, and replication in production with tested recovery procedures
- Strong AWS database experience (RDS/Aurora, DocumentDB, DynamoDB, S3, IAM, Secrets Manager, CloudWatch)
- Proficiency in Python or Bash for automation
- Experience with Git and CI-based change workflows
- Experience handling PII and customer data under SOC 2, GDPR, or similar compliance frameworks
- Verification mindset: confirm results rather than assume, write runbooks proactively
- Willingness to participate in on-call rotation
- Remote work based in India
Preferred qualifications: Apache Iceberg, AWS Glue, Athena, or open table formats on S3; Liquibase or Flyway; MongoDB Atlas; Kafka or CDC pipelines; Kubernetes and Terraform; identity/fraud prevention/regulated SaaS experience; MongoDB or AWS database certifications.
