Wayve is building an AI platform for autonomous driving that learns directly from real-world experience. The Senior Data Scientist role sits within the Product Dependability team, which bridges embodied AI technology with real-world automotive product demands across systems engineering, safety, cybersecurity, and data analysis. In this role, you will use data to understand how Wayve's driving models perform in the real world, identify their limitations, and validate whether evaluation methods reflect actual customer needs. You'll define data collection and validation requirements, identify gaps and biases in datasets, and translate findings into actionable recommendations for model development and product improvement. This is not a model-building role—it's an opportunity to influence what gets developed, how it's evaluated, and the evidence used to demonstrate dependable performance. Day-to-day responsibilities include: - Analyzing target markets to understand road infrastructure, weather, traffic density, local driving behaviors, and regulatory requirements - Defining Operational Design Domain (ODD) boundaries, edge conditions, and potential failure triggers to inform data collection and system design - Mapping driving competencies required in each region, quantifying complexity and frequency using traffic data and real-world observations - Analyzing model performance metrics and behavioral patterns to identify data gaps, edge-case risks, and improvement opportunities - Using historical data and statistical models to understand behaviors affecting reliability and Mean Time Between Failures (MTBF) - Translating findings into actionable data strategies, technical requirements, and deployment recommendations with cross-functional partners Key projects include ODD characterization, behavioral competency mapping, scenario coverage and scaling frameworks, model behavior analysis, reliability and data guidance, and contributions to simulation and testing inputs. Wayve operates a hybrid model with main hubs in London, Sunnyvale, Yokohama, Herzlija, Vancouver, and Leonberg. The company emphasizes that much of how it works is still being written, and the role suits people who want real ownership over their work. REQUIREMENTS: - 7+ years of experience in systems engineering, automotive data analysis, data science, or related field - Familiarity with traffic regulations and human driving behaviors across multiple geographies - Proficiency with data analysis tools: Python, SQL, GIS, Jupyter - Comfortable working with large datasets through platforms such as Databricks - Ability to visualize and communicate ODD and scenario coverage metrics, turning complex analysis into clear, actionable insights - Effective cross-disciplinary collaboration and ability to translate domain analysis into technical and product requirements - Thrives in agile, fast-scaling environments with strong execution mindset PREFERRED: - Experience analyzing or defining ODDs for autonomous driving or advanced driver assistance systems (AV/ADAS) - Master's degree or PhD in Physics, Statistics, or Mathematics with specialization in traffic system modeling, autonomous driving deployment, or urban mobility analysis
