Thunes is a global money movement platform operating a Direct Global Network that enables real-time payments across 130+ countries and 80+ currencies. The network connects to over 7 billion mobile wallets and bank accounts via 350+ payment methods, serving clients like Uber, Deliveroo, Grab, and WeChat.
As Senior Data Engineer, you will drive the development and optimization of Thunes' data platform, working at the intersection of data engineering, infrastructure automation, and business logic. You'll own the full lifecycle of data systems supporting a fintech operation at global scale.
Key responsibilities include:
• Design and implement end-to-end data pipelines using Python and SQL within a cloud-native data lake, handling both batch and streaming workloads
• Manage containerized data workloads and orchestrate automated workflows using Apache Airflow, Terraform, and Infrastructure as Code practices
• Maintain and evolve real-time data replication and stream processing architectures using Apache Kafka or similar distributed messaging systems to ensure low-latency data availability
• Establish data governance frameworks and automated validation protocols to ensure data accuracy, compliance, and platform reliability
• Partner with cross-functional stakeholders to translate complex business requirements into performant data models for reporting and business intelligence
• Provide technical leadership on continuous platform improvements, ensuring the stack remains resilient and performant as data volumes and complexity scale
You bring proven experience managing and scaling modern distributed data platforms in cloud environments (AWS or GCP preferred). You have deep expertise with workflow orchestration tools (Airflow, Prefect, or Dagster), Infrastructure as Code (Terraform or Pulumi), and distributed messaging systems (Kafka, Kinesis, Pub/Sub). Your advanced Python and SQL skills are complemented by strong data governance knowledge including lineage, metadata management, and quality checks. You combine technical excellence with business acumen, able to interface directly with business units and architect schemas supporting complex organizational needs.
