Anduril Industries, a defense technology company, is seeking a Senior Controls Engineer to join the Manufacturing Automation team in Costa Mesa, California. This role is central to designing and deploying automated manufacturing systems across Anduril's factories at national scale.
You will own the full lifecycle of controls systems for manufacturing environments, from initial factory ideation through machine commissioning, proof of rate capability, and handoff to sustainment teams. Key responsibilities include architecting and writing PLC code for high-volume manufacturing applications with emphasis on organization, structure, documentation, and reusability. You will generate and enforce internal standards for control system architectures, regulatory compliance, and safety approvals.
The role involves integrating internal and external FactoryOS software into automation equipment and production lines, leading root cause analysis on automation failures to ensure rapid resolution and long-term reliability, and installing, configuring, and tuning servo drives and variable frequency drives (VFDs). You will partner with cross-functional teams to troubleshoot equipment issues, reduce downtime, and drive continuous improvement initiatives.
Required qualifications include a Bachelor's degree in Robotics, Computer Science, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or similar discipline, plus 8+ years of hands-on experience in controls and automation within production environments. You must be proficient in PLC programming on both Rockwell and Siemens platforms, Ignition SCADA development, servo drive and VFD configuration, PID tuning, and ethernet-based communication protocols. Experience integrating with Manufacturing Execution Systems (MES) and Quality Management Systems (QMS) is required. U.S. Person status is mandatory due to access to export-controlled information.
Preferred qualifications include 10+ years of controls and automation experience, familiarity with control panel layout and electrical component selection, proficiency in CAD packages (Solidworks, NX, CATIA, AutoCAD), and TUV FS Engineer certification for functional safety of machinery.
