Standard Bots is building a robotics, vision, and networking platform to democratize real-world automation. The company seeks a seasoned controls engineer to own control quality across robotic products, operating at the boundary between hardware and software.
You will be responsible for control performance across products—smooth motion, tracking accuracy, and high-fidelity impedance control. Key responsibilities include designing and owning control-loop benchmarking and validation across communication architectures (CAN, EtherCAT); analytically modeling in-house actuator plants (Motor → Gearbox → Feedback) and verifying through physical testing; implementing safety-rated monitoring and stop functions to certification rigor; ensuring maximal servo performance while maintaining stability and rejecting disturbances; debugging complex system-level issues spanning software, firmware, electrical, and component behavior; building test and diagnostic tooling for tuning and hardware characterization; and acting as a technical bridge between hardware and software teams.
The Controls & Firmware group focuses on foundational technologies including motor and actuator control, embedded communications, system health monitoring/logging, and hardware bring-up. The tech stack includes STM32 MCUs, C/C++ and MATLAB/Simulink, FreeRTOS, CAN/EtherCAT communications, and Linux with modern CI/CD tooling.
You bring 5+ years of proven experience modeling control systems, tuning control loops on real-world systems, and validating models through physical experiments. You have strong classical controls fundamentals—analytical and heuristic tuning, plant and controller modeling, gain and phase margin analysis, bandwidth modeling and testing—along with real-time signal processing and filtering. You understand firmware, electrical, and mechanical systems well enough to find and resolve issues at their boundaries. You excel in written and verbal communication, are impact-driven, and prioritize simplicity, reliability, and velocity.
Nice-to-have skills include experience with modern control techniques (MPC), sensors (especially encoders) and sensor fusion, robotic motion planning system interfaces, and electrical/board-level experience with oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, and DMMs.
This role is onsite at Glen Cove, NY headquarters a minimum of 3 days per week.
