Salary: USD 167,000 - 230,000 / annual

Otter is a software platform that helps restaurants succeed in online food delivery. The company serves major brands like Chick-fil-A, Ben & Jerry's, KFC, and Eataly, providing tools to increase sales, reduce order issues, and streamline delivery operations. Otter Grow is the division building the Direct-to-Consumer (D2C) dining platform, which includes end-to-end solutions for direct ordering, merchant storefront configuration, and customer engagement. As a Senior Backend Software Engineer, you will be a backend generalist on a fast-paced, product-focused engineering team. You'll design and scale services powering customizable front-end web experiences, facility direct ordering, and advanced merchant tools. Core responsibilities include: - Architecting, building, and maintaining highly scalable backend services in Java to power the direct ordering ecosystem and storefront configuration tools - Designing and optimizing robust, flexible APIs - Collaborating closely with front-end engineers, product managers, and designers to translate merchant and consumer needs into reliable backend logic Required qualifications: - Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or equivalent professional experience - 3+ years of professional software engineering experience - Deep understanding of backend system design, APIs, data stores, microservices, concurrency, and distributed systems - Proficiency with Java and/or Go (though engineering fundamentals matter more than specific languages) - Experience with relational and/or NoSQL databases (PostgreSQL, MongoDB, Redis) - Experience with cloud platforms (AWS, Google Cloud, or Azure) Preferred qualifications include D2C or e-commerce product engineering experience, building microservices handling complex merchant configurations or payment flows, full-stack background, and passion for product impact. The role is based in the Los Angeles office with five-day-per-week onsite work.
