Via is building the technology backbone for modern public transportation systems globally, serving hundreds of agency partners. As a Senior Backend Engineer focused on Voice AI, you will own the end-to-end development of Via's customer-facing Voice AI agent—a conversational interface serving hundreds of thousands of riders daily.
You will architect and ship features across the full stack with deep backend expertise, building robust, scalable services that power real-time AI interactions. This role involves continuous exploration of cutting-edge LLMs and AI providers, evaluating and integrating the latest models as the market evolves. You'll drive product initiatives proactively, proposing new tools and innovative approaches to enhance the AI agent's intelligence and intuitiveness.
Beyond individual contribution, you will mentor engineers on your team, sharing knowledge in both traditional software engineering and emerging AI paradigms. You'll lead architectural discussions, conduct code reviews, and foster a culture of continuous learning and engineering excellence.
The ideal candidate brings 5+ years of professional full-stack experience with an exceptionally strong backend foundation and proven track record shipping production-grade systems. Deep fascination with AI is essential—prior experience with Python, prompt engineering, working directly with LLM models, and building AI agents is highly valued. You thrive in ambiguity, learn fearlessly, and keep pace with the rapidly evolving AI landscape. You operate with high agency and ownership while being deeply collaborative, identifying product bottlenecks and feature gaps and working seamlessly with the team to solve them.
