GitLab is seeking an experienced Senior Backend Engineer to join the Plan: Planning Views team in Bangalore. You'll work on the backend architecture powering GitLab's work items platform, which serves millions of work items across tens of thousands of groups and projects.
In this role, you'll collaborate closely with product managers and users to shape requirements and break projects into shippable iterations. You'll design and implement backend features across the GitLab monolith, including GraphQL and REST APIs and real-time subscriptions, with a strong focus on performance, reliability, and user impact.
Key responsibilities include optimizing PostgreSQL performance at scale through query optimization, indexing, denormalization, and partitioning; moving workloads to Elasticsearch or ClickHouse where appropriate; contributing to real-time features; creating proofs of concept for complex work; and mentoring engineers and open source contributors through code reviews, pairing, and feedback.
You'll also participate in on-call rotations to troubleshoot production issues, contribute to root cause analysis, and improve observability. Additionally, you'll work to improve developer experience for your team through test infrastructure, review processes, and collaborative practices.
You bring a strong product mindset with deep care for user needs and experience leading and supporting other engineers on multi-month projects. You have full-stack experience with current backend focus, proficiency in Ruby and Ruby on Rails, and strong PostgreSQL skills. Experience with GraphQL/REST API design, large automated test suites, and integrating AI into development workflows is valued. You communicate effectively in asynchronous, distributed environments.
