OpenFX is building infrastructure to enable cross-border payments at scale, moving money as freely as data across time zones and legacy banking systems. The company is backed by top-tier investors (Accel, Lightspeed, NfX) and has assembled a team with deep experience from JP Morgan, Goldman Sachs, FalconX, PayPal, Affirm, and other leading fintech and financial institutions. This Staff-level individual contributor role owns the technical direction and execution of the payments platform—the systems that move money across borders. You will lead the hardest technical problems in payment orchestration, corridor and partner integrations, FX and quoting, payment lifecycle management (statuses, webhooks, returns, recalls), settlement confirmation, and the regulated controls (safeguarding, transaction monitoring) required by EU licenses. Key responsibilities include: architecting corridor expansion to turn bespoke integration projects into configuration-driven, repeatable capability; designing and maintaining regulated controls with audit trails that satisfy regulators and auditors; defining standards for money-path code (idempotency, exactly-once effects, consistency under partner failure, safe retries); owning resilience against external partners (degraded-mode behavior, failover, routing, reconciliation); leading architecture reviews for high-risk changes; mentoring senior engineers; and partnering across product, compliance, risk, and banking partnerships to translate technical trade-offs. You will report to an Engineering Manager and work closely with engineers, product, compliance, and partnerships. This is a hands-on technical leadership role where the cost of defects is measured in real money, stuck customer payments, or regulatory findings. Must-haves: significant experience as a senior or staff-level backend engineer owning complex production systems; hands-on experience building or operating payment systems (orchestration, partner integrations, payment lifecycle) with deep understanding of money-path failure modes (duplicates, partial failures, cut-offs, stuck payments); experience integrating external banking, payment, or FX partners and navigating sandbox-vs-production drift, credential churn, undocumented behavior, and partner outages; sound judgment on correctness under failure (retries, idempotency, exactly-once effects); deep expertise in distributed systems and reliability/performance/scalability trade-offs; excellent technical communication and ability to lead cross-team initiatives without formal authority; fluency in modern TypeScript/Node backend stack and cloud infrastructure. What helps you stand out: cross-border payments experience (corridor launches, FX, SWIFT/SEPA, local clearing schemes in EU, LATAM, Middle East, APAC); experience building safeguarding, transaction monitoring, sanctions screening, or regulated controls in EMI/PI, PSD2, or MiCAR environments; multi-partner orchestration (routing, partner health scoring, failover on live money flows); experience with durable workflow or orchestration systems.
