OpenFX is building infrastructure to enable cross-border payments for institutions, moving money as freely as data across time zones and legacy systems. The company is backed by top-tier investors (Accel, Lightspeed, NfX) and led by a team with experience from J.P. Morgan, Goldman Sachs, FalconX, PayPal, Affirm, Polygon, Kraken, and Nium. You will be the senior-most individual contributor owning the architecture of OpenFX's trading and hedging core—the systems that price client trades, execute them, and manage risk. Two teams fall under this scope: Trading (client trade experience, quote generation, pricing strategy, spread engine, trade lifecycle across GUI, API, and conversational AI) and Hedging (inventory and exposure management, risk management, hedging across venues, smart routing, market making, and PnL calculation). This is a hands-on role. You will write code, set architectural direction, and be the person the organization trusts to get the trade and risk path right. You'll own the Client Trading Engine, Pricing Engine, Risk Management Engine, and Smart Hedging. The problems are genuinely hard and often under-defined; you'll take large architectural bets in a domain where correctness is measured in real money and latency is measured on live client trades. Key responsibilities include: owning the architecture of core trading and hedging systems; breaking complex, ambiguous systems into smaller components with clear contracts and independent deliverability; setting and driving architectural vision and taking large bets through to completion; building for scale as volume, venues, and currency corridors grow; owning observability standards across all components; designing meaningful alerting, fallback, and recovery strategies; coaching and mentoring engineers; and partnering with product, risk, and engineering managers to connect architectural decisions to business outcomes (TPV, gross revenue, net revenue). Required: 7–12 years building and operating production backend systems; deep experience with distributed systems (consistency, failure modes, trade-offs); experience building orchestrators and complex, long-running workflows that are durable and recoverable; strong command of databases at scale (sharding, multi-region deployments, data protection constraints); track record on high-scale systems with observability and operational tooling; comfort with abstract, ambiguous problems; hands-on coding with architectural judgment from building; proficiency with AI coding tools; influential and collaborative leadership; data-driven approach with high agency. Standout qualifications: fintech, trading, or cryptocurrency background; experience handling financial data (pricing, positions, PnL, market data); experience with pricing, spread, or hedging systems; experience with market microstructure or multi-venue execution and smart order routing. Success means: trading and hedging systems are correct, observable, and resilient with contained, early-detected, recoverable failures; architectural decisions hold up without fundamental rework within 12–18 months; engineers across both pods ship faster due to abstractions, tooling, and standards you've built; systemic risks are anticipated and addressed before incidents or PnL surprises; you've raised the technical ceiling of trading and hedging engineering at OpenFX.
