OpenFX is building infrastructure to enable cross-border payments at scale, unrestricted by legacy systems and time zones. The company is backed by top-tier investors (Accel, Lightspeed, NfX) and has assembled a team with deep fintech and payments experience from JP Morgan, Goldman Sachs, FalconX, PayPal, Affirm, Polygon, and Kraken. This is a Staff-level individual contributor role on the Banking team, responsible for the core systems that handle how OpenFX holds, moves, and accounts for money: ledgers, payouts, reconciliation, and settlement. It is a hands-on technical leadership position where correctness is non-negotiable and defects carry real financial consequences. You will report to an Engineering Manager and collaborate closely with engineers, product, and cross-functional teams. Your responsibilities include: - Owning the technical direction for the banking core (ledgers, payouts, reconciliation, settlement) - Leading architecture reviews for new financial systems and high-risk changes where correctness and auditability are critical - Defining and maintaining standards for money-handling code: idempotency, consistency guarantees, audit trails, and safe data migrations - Designing and building shared banking foundations to reduce technical debt and unblock other teams - Owning reliability and observability for money flows; leading incident response on critical issues - Mentoring senior engineers and helping define hiring standards - Partnering across product, finance, compliance, and risk to translate technical trade-offs for non-technical stakeholders You must have significant experience as a senior or staff-level backend engineer with a proven track record owning complex production systems. Deep expertise in distributed systems, reliability, performance, and scalability trade-offs is essential. You need sound judgment on correctness under failure (retries, idempotency, safe critical-data handling) and excellent technical communication skills to lead cross-team initiatives without formal authority. Fluency in modern TypeScript/Node backend stacks and cloud infrastructure is required. Standout candidates will have experience building or operating production double-entry ledgers, payment or payout systems (multi-rail, multi-currency, FX), durable workflow or orchestration engines, strong observability practices on high-stakes flows, and prior fintech or financial services experience navigating regulatory complexity. Success means the banking core is correct, auditable, and resilient; architectural decisions hold up without fundamental rework within 12–18 months; other engineers ship faster thanks to your shared foundations and tooling; money-path incidents are rare and recoverable; and you've raised the technical ceiling of banking engineering at OpenFX.
