You will join the Intercom product line—a "startup within a startup" that has achieved the most successful product launch in Verkada's history. This team is building cloud-managed intercom systems that deliver rich, low-latency, multimodal interactions (video, audio, and access control integration) at the edge. The product enables customers to receive calls from anywhere with high-quality video and 2-way audio, and the roadmap includes AI-driven visitor screening and remote environmental sensing.
As Senior Backend Engineer, you will have significant ownership over the architectural direction of this burgeoning product line. You'll architect scalable systems and design latency-sensitive applications for intercoms deployed globally. You'll work cross-functionally with firmware, mobile, and frontend engineers to design complex systems with simple, robust backend APIs. This role emphasizes end-to-end ownership: shipping significant products, driving technical direction, leading engineers on project execution, and resolving problems that span team boundaries.
Key responsibilities include designing and maintaining backend systems for a rapidly growing product, collaborating on system architecture, mentoring engineers, and owning backend infrastructure end-to-end. You'll work with relational databases (Postgres preferred) and containerized deployments (Kubernetes experience a plus).
REQUIREMENTS:
- 7+ years of industry backend software engineering experience
- 4+ years of professional experience as a backend engineer at a rapidly growing startup or innovative company
- BS or graduate degree in Computer Science, Mathematics, Engineering, or science
- Experience driving technical direction and leading engineers on project execution
- Ability to architect scalable systems and design latency-sensitive applications
- Experience collaborating cross-functionally to design complex systems with simple, robust backend APIs
- History of shipping significant products with end-to-end backend ownership
- Ownership mentality and ability to resolve problems spanning team boundaries
- Deep expertise with relational databases (Postgres experience a plus)
- Demonstrated expertise in Python or GoLang
- Experience with Kubernetes a plus
- Ability to take less-than-fully-fleshed-out product ideas and drive them to completion
