Bestow is a vertical technology platform serving major life insurers, modernizing a centuries-old industry through AI-powered infrastructure. The IPC (Implementation & Platform Configuration) Engineering team builds the digital enrollment experience and modular backend services that power Bestow's carrier partners.
As Senior Backend Engineer II, you'll design and operate core backend services using Python, Go, and Java, sitting at the heart of Bestow's platform. You'll contribute to technical architecture decisions, balancing delivery speed with long-term maintainability. The role involves building scalable microservices that integrate across Bestow's ecosystem via gRPC, REST, and async messaging on Kubernetes in GCP.
Key responsibilities include designing and building backend services with Python and PostgreSQL, collaborating with product and underwriting teams on platform capabilities, and helping scale reliability as new carrier partners onboard. You'll mentor engineers through code review and design review, support production reliability by maintaining SLOs and strengthening observability, and share on-call responsibilities for IPC workloads. A distinctive aspect of this role is deliberate, daily use of agentic AI coding tools (Claude Code, Cursor, Copilot) as core to your workflow, helping the team adopt effective AI-assisted development practices.
You'll communicate technical decisions and trade-offs clearly in writing, as the team operates remote-first with async-heavy collaboration. The role requires 5+ years of professional backend software development experience at senior level, with strong proficiency in Go and Python (Java experience a plus). You should be comfortable with distributed systems, microservices, API design (Protocol Buffers, OpenAPI), PostgreSQL at scale, and cloud infrastructure (Kubernetes, Docker, GCP or equivalent). You proactively identify risks and drive solutions to completion, write maintainable well-tested software, and have demonstrated experience using agentic AI tools in daily workflow.
