Orkes is building the operating system for AI agents and workflows, providing infrastructure to move AI from conversation to real-world action. The platform is built on the open-source Conductor engine and handles billions of workflows at scale, enabling enterprises to bridge LLM-driven reasoning with deterministic execution.
As a Senior Backend Engineer, you will own the architecture of the multi-cloud control plane, designing critical guardrails and orchestration layers that make complex agentic workflows production-ready. You'll work at the frontier of agentic workflow development, transforming experimental AI prototypes into scalable business engines.
Required qualifications include 7+ years of experience with deep expertise in object-oriented languages (Java, Go, C++), proven ability to set patterns and lead code reviews in large codebases, and depth in at least one major cloud platform (AWS, Azure, GCP). You must drive ambiguous cross-team initiatives from problem definition to measured outcomes, own operational architecture including on-call responsibilities, observability, SLOs, and blast-radius containment. The role requires distributed-systems architecture experience with real consistency/availability tradeoffs at scale, ability to ship full-stack vertical slices in React/TypeScript when needed, and thoughtful AI-coding experience where you guide AI tools precisely rather than relying on autonomous decision-making.
Nice-to-have skills include hands-on experience across all three major clouds, Java/Spring Boot expertise, familiarity with Netflix Conductor or Temporal, Go proficiency, multi-tenant control-plane experience at scale, and chaos/performance engineering background.
This is a full-time, in-office position reporting to the Head of Engineering within the Cloud & Platform Engineering department. The role offers competitive total compensation with base salary $180,000–$240,000 depending on experience and leveling, plus generous equity. Benefits include comprehensive health coverage (medical, dental, vision) and flexible PTO.
