Trigger.dev is a platform for running reliable AI agents and workflows. The company provides a managed cloud service where developers deploy and scale production systems with built-in orchestration, scheduling, monitoring, and debugging tools. As a Senior Backend Engineer, you will design and implement SDK and platform features end-to-end, from API surface to production rollout. You'll own database design, creating schemas and data models that scale with the product. Query performance and data access optimization will be core responsibilities—you'll create and refine patterns that handle real customer traffic at scale. You'll build backend systems engineered for production load, where reliability, throughput, and durability are your responsibility, not delegated. You'll design and implement scalable APIs and services, apply security best practices across everything you ship, and implement observability tooling (monitoring, logging, debugging) to spot and fix problems quickly. You'll also contribute to architectural decisions and shape the platform's technical roadmap.
Working at a commercial open-source software company means more than coding: you'll engage with an active Discord and GitHub community, help customers, review PRs, write documentation, and contribute to product-led growth through code examples, blog articles, videos, and social content.
The team is small with a flat hierarchy. You'll operate autonomously with trust to get the job done, while raising your hand quickly if you need help. The environment is fast-paced and challenging, with emphasis on continuous learning and taking time to recharge.
REQUIREMENTS
Must-have:
- Deep expertise in Node.js and TypeScript (the team uses Remix)
- Production experience with Postgres and Redis, including schema design, query tuning, and running these systems at scale
- Cloud infrastructure experience (AWS, GCP, or Azure)
- Comfortable being on call; reliability is a shared team responsibility
- Open to in-person team events throughout the year
Highly valued:
- Proven track record contributing to open-source projects
- Previous experience as a venture-backed startup founder
- React or Remix experience
- High-throughput system design
- SDK design for developers
- Self-managed Kubernetes experience
- Linux familiarity
- Observability/OTel experience
