The Device Platform team owns the critical backend infrastructure connecting Verkada's cloud services to deployed hardware. This includes device provisioning, over-the-air firmware rollouts, and the licensing layer that monetizes devices. The team currently operates at millions of devices and is scaling to the next order of magnitude while maintaining the consistency, latency, and uptime guarantees enterprise customers depend on.
As a Senior Backend Engineer, you will architect and ship major platform features end-to-end, such as the IoT core, device-metrics platform, or licensing ledger. You'll lead operational improvements that increase system robustness, reduce on-call burden, and drive incident learning. A key part of the role is teaching through design reviews, code reviews, written communication, and direct mentorship of junior engineers. You'll also listen to other Verkada product teams and help shape the platform roadmap toward the company's long-term strategic bets.
The team is currently five senior engineers plus a new graduate, and is expanding as the platform's influence across Verkada grows. The culture emphasizes high trust, inclusive feedback, learning out loud, and collective improvement.
Requirements: 6+ years building backend services at scale with strong consistency, latency, and uptime guarantees. Fluency in Python, Go, Ruby, or Node.js. Ability to listen to cross-functional teams, shape shared technical direction, and ship changes that enable others. U.S. citizenship or permanent residency required for FedRAMP compliance. Full-time, five days per week onsite in San Mateo.
