Verkada is a $5.8B-valued physical AI platform protecting organizations through integrated video security, access control, air quality sensors, alarms, intercoms, and visitor management. The company serves 30,000+ customers including 100+ Fortune 500 companies, with over 2 million devices deployed across 170+ countries.
The Device Platform team owns the backend infrastructure connecting Verkada's cloud to deployed hardware, managing device provisioning, OTA firmware rollouts, and the licensing layer that monetizes devices. The team currently operates at millions of devices and is scaling to the next order of magnitude while maintaining enterprise-grade consistency, latency, and uptime guarantees.
As a Senior Backend Engineer, you will architect and ship major platform features end-to-end (IoT core, device-metrics platform, licensing ledger) while mentoring teammates through design reviews, code reviews, and direct collaboration. You'll lead operational improvements that increase system robustness and reduce incident response burden. The role emphasizes cross-team alignment and communication—you'll listen to product teams across Verkada and help shape the platform roadmap toward company-wide strategic bets.
The team is currently five senior engineers plus a new graduate, and is expanding as the platform's scope grows. The culture emphasizes high trust, direct feedback, learning out loud, and collective improvement.
You bring 6+ years building backend services at scale with strong consistency, latency, and uptime requirements. You're fluent in Python, Go, or adjacent languages (Ruby, Node.js). You excel at listening to other engineering teams, shaping shared technical direction, and shipping changes that enable downstream teams without surprises. U.S. citizenship or permanent residency is required for FedRAMP compliance. This is a five-days-per-week onsite role in San Mateo.
