GitLab is seeking a Senior Backend Engineer to join the Source Code Experience team within the Create stage. This role focuses on building backend capabilities that support reliable, efficient source code workflows as AI agents increasingly collaborate with developers on code management tasks.
You will work with Ruby and GraphQL to enhance critical source code experiences across GitLab.com, self-managed instances, and GitLab Dedicated. The Source Code group owns backend and frontend aspects of source code product categories, and you'll contribute to maintaining high reliability through performance tuning, caching, rate limiting, testing, observability, and resiliency improvements.
Key responsibilities include:
- Develop secure, well-tested, performant features using Ruby and GraphQL
- Transform complex requirements and legacy constraints into clear, reliable solutions
- Design and maintain backend services, APIs, data models, and business logic supporting intuitive workflows
- Collaborate across product management, design, testing, security, and other engineering teams
- Leverage AI agents for well-scoped work while critically reviewing output
- Write maintainable code following GitLab standards and advocate for best practices through code review
- Strengthen reliability by monitoring production metrics, participating in on-call rotation, troubleshooting incidents, and improving observability
- Share knowledge through documentation and collaborative code review
Required experience includes professional backend development with Ruby and GraphQL, solid understanding of relational databases, SQL, data modeling, caching, and background processing. You should have experience improving complex user-facing workflows, writing comprehensive tests (unit, integration, acceptance), familiarity with Git and collaborative code review, and experience using AI coding agents in complex monorepos. Strong written and spoken English communication is essential for this remote, asynchronous environment, along with the ability to manage priorities independently and work through ambiguity.
