MAG is the market-making and proprietary trading arm of Novig, a CFTC-designated prediction-market platform focused on sports-related event contracts. As a Senior Backend Engineer on the Core Trading Systems team, you will architect and build the infrastructure powering market-making and proprietary trading across multiple venues.
Key responsibilities include:
- Design and implement the core trading engine, including matching engine, market-data pipelines, risk controls, and real-time state machines
- Build deterministic, event-driven systems for matching, settlement, and market-making flows with strong ordering and idempotency guarantees
- Develop high-throughput, low-latency infrastructure for data ingestion, distribution, replay, order gateways, session management, and pre-/at-trade risk checks
- Create developer-first APIs for algorithmic trading integrations and high-reliability endpoints for programmatic and UI clients
- Collaborate with frontend, trading, product, and SRE teams on seamless user experience, recovery, failover, observability, and performance optimization
- Expand product surface via modular backend services and contribute to architecture discussions and production debugging
- Optimize system hot paths using profiling and tracing; improve architecture for modularity, stability, and regulatory compliance
- Share on-call duty with roughly one weekend rotation every six weeks to support live sports market operations
This is a high-ownership role on a small, senior team where your architectural decisions will directly shape how the entire trading operation scales. You'll work directly with traders, seeing the impact of your work in PnL within days.
The environment is fast-paced and autonomous—decisions happen quickly with minimal process overhead. This role is not suitable for those who need clear swim lanes, heavy process, or external direction. Work is tied to live sports, which means potential nights, weekends, and high-pressure situations.
REQUIREMENTS:
- 4+ years of backend engineering experience, ideally in distributed or real-time systems
- Proficiency in Go, Rust, or C++
- Strong knowledge of concurrent programming, event-driven architectures, and relational databases (PostgreSQL preferred)
- Understanding of CAP tradeoffs, ordering semantics, and consistency/availability considerations
- Ability to navigate ambiguity and take ownership across large technical surfaces
- Clear communication and complex problem-solving skills
BONUS:
- Experience with matching engines, market-making systems, order books, HFT infrastructure, Kafka, Redis, real-time streaming systems, or financial exchanges
- Passion for sports, betting, and market microstructure
