GitLab is seeking a Senior Backend Engineer to design, implement, and evolve product capabilities for the Core DevOps Container Registry platform. You will solve high-scope backend problems and influence the technical and product direction of your team, working across product, frontend, infrastructure, data, and security boundaries.
In this role, you will drive technical direction by designing and shipping moderate to complex backend features with minimal guidance, making pragmatic architectural choices between modular-monolith code, shared components, or independently operated services. You will raise the bar by advocating for product quality, security, availability, and performance, defining backend standards for style, maintainability, testing, APIs, and operational readiness. You will mentor associate and intermediate engineers, remove technical blockers, and improve team delivery practices through code and design reviews.
You will own operational excellence by diagnosing and preventing performance and reliability issues at scale, participating in incident response, and acting as a technical owner where appropriate. A key differentiator of this role is integrating AI into production engineering work to improve outcomes, evaluating its effectiveness, and coaching others on responsible, high-judgment use.
GitLab is the intelligent orchestration platform for DevSecOps, trusted by more than 50 million registered users and over 50% of the Fortune 100. The company embraces AI as a core productivity multiplier, with all team members expected to incorporate AI into their daily workflows. You will thrive in a remote-first, asynchronous organization where clear written communication and self-direction are essential.
REQUIREMENTS:
- Deep backend expertise: strong command of backend architecture, APIs, data systems, and performance tuning in complex product or service environments
- Proficiency in modern backend languages with deep understanding of systems programming; ability to learn and adapt valued over mastery of a single language
- Experience designing or evolving modular backend boundaries, bounded contexts, and migration-safe architectures
- Ability to lead through influence, technical judgment, and clear written communication, bridging product needs and technical reality
- Proven experience building or operating agentic systems in production—moving beyond prompt engineering to architecting loops, tool-use, and error-handling strategies that ensure reliability at scale
