You'll join as a Senior Backend Engineer in a scrum team of 6-8 engineers, a UX designer, and a Product Manager. Your responsibilities include mentoring junior developers, making architectural decisions, and contributing to the codebase. You'll work on high-impact features including social investment functionality, document and workflow management, AI-enhanced products, and legal template generation. You'll report directly to the Director of Engineering and have autonomy to drive innovation across these domains.
The engineering team is international, spanning 12 countries with 20+ developers based primarily in the UK and France. The role operates on a hybrid model: teams meet fortnightly at the Old Street office in London for whiteboarding, planning, and collaboration, with flexibility to work remotely otherwise.
Key technical requirements include strong backend development skills with JVM languages (particularly Kotlin) and Spring framework experience. You should excel at building high-performance APIs, writing secure code from first principles, and providing thoughtful code reviews. Experience with test-driven development and software engineering best practices is essential. Bonus qualifications include personal projects (open source, blogging, side work), hands-on experience with LLMs like Claude and building custom agents/plugins, expertise in monitoring and observability for web applications and microservices, and a product-engineer mindset aligned with agile principles.
