Plooto is a Canada-based fintech company serving 14,000+ businesses across North America with payments and cash flow management solutions. The company is rebuilding and scaling the next generation of its platform and seeks a Senior Backend Engineer for real ownership, scale, and impact.
In this role, you will design and build high-throughput, cloud-native systems that process financial transactions, power complex workflows, and deliver real-time financial insights. You'll own the design and delivery of scalable backend services using .NET and Azure, architect event-driven distributed systems, and build API-first services with strong contracts, reliability, and observability. You will lead complex technical initiatives from design through production rollout, make pragmatic architecture decisions balancing speed and scalability, and partner closely with Product and Design teams to translate ambiguous problems into elegant solutions.
You'll improve system performance, reliability, and resilience as the platform scales, raise the engineering bar through thoughtful code reviews and mentorship, and contribute to a culture of experimentation and continuous improvement. This is not a feature-factory role—you'll influence engineering standards, help shape architecture decisions, and work cross-functionally to distill strategic needs into actionable engineering output. You'll also share your engineering passion through regular Lunch & Learn sessions and inspire the broader engineering organization.

**Requirements:**
- 5+ years of professional backend engineering experience, preferably in high-growth or product-led environments
- Strong expertise in C# or another strongly typed language and modern backend design principles
- Proven track record of writing production-grade, testable, maintainable code
- Deep experience designing and building RESTful APIs in production
- Hands-on experience with cloud-native architectures (Kubernetes, serverless, managed services), ideally Azure
- Experience building or operating distributed, high-throughput systems
- Experience with event-driven architectures and streaming systems (Kafka or similar)
- Experience implementing automated testing strategies (unit, integration, contract, end-to-end)
- Strong understanding of data storage patterns across RDBMS and NoSQL systems
- Bias toward ownership, action, and accountability
- Ability to navigate ambiguity and drive clarity in fast-moving environments
- Proven success working in cross-functional team environments
- Ability to effectively use AI tools to increase velocity, efficiency, and quality
- Computer Science degree or equivalent
**Bonus:** Experience in fintech, payments, or regulated domains; prior startup experience scaling systems and teams.
