As a Senior Backend Engineer (L50), you'll join one of ~650 engineers building Monzo's in-house banking platform. You'll work in cross-functional squads alongside product managers, designers, mobile engineers, data analysts, and other specialists to build and support specific parts of the platform.
Monzo's engineering collectives include Core Banking, Business Banking, Wealth, Borrowing, Growth, Payments, Platform, Fincrime, and Security & Expansion. Many collectives integrate machine learning and AI—from financial crime detection to intelligent financial tools—offering exposure to cutting-edge technology.
Your day-to-day involves collaborating with your squad to design, build, and maintain backend systems that directly impact millions of customers. You'll contribute to a codebase that powers critical financial infrastructure, participate in code reviews, mentor junior engineers, and help shape technical direction within your collective.
Monzo values learning and welcomes engineers from diverse backgrounds; no formal qualifications are required. The company emphasizes flexibility and wellbeing: while the main tech hub is in London, engineers work across the UK. There's no mandated office attendance requirement. Core hours are maintained for connection, and the company supports travel costs for out-of-office collaboration.
