GitLab is seeking a Senior Backend Engineer to design, implement, and evolve product capabilities on its intelligent orchestration platform for DevSecOps. In this role, you will solve high-scope backend problems and influence the technical and product direction of your teams, moving beyond assigned work to actively improve system quality, reliability, and performance.
You will work across product, frontend, infrastructure, data, and security boundaries, making sound architectural trade-offs and communicating complex ideas clearly in an asynchronous, remote-first environment. Key responsibilities include designing and shipping moderate to complex backend features with minimal guidance, advocating for product quality and security, mentoring associate and intermediate engineers, diagnosing and preventing performance issues at scale, and integrating agentic AI into production engineering workflows.
You will drive technical direction by making pragmatic choices between modular-monolith code, shared components, and independently operated services. You'll define backend standards for style, maintainability, testing, APIs, and operational readiness. Participation in incident response and acting as a technical owner are expected where appropriate.
Required expertise includes deep backend architecture knowledge, APIs, data systems, and performance tuning in complex product environments. You should demonstrate proficiency in modern backend languages with a deep understanding of systems programming, and the ability to learn and adapt over mastery of a single language. Architectural judgment in designing or evolving modular backend boundaries and migration-safe architectures is essential.
Proven experience building or operating agentic systems in production is required—moving beyond prompt engineering to architecting loops, tool-use, and error-handling strategies that ensure reliability at scale. You will influence team objectives and long-range goals through technical judgment and clear written communication, effectively bridging product needs and technical reality.
Helpful experience includes work with high-throughput distributed systems, concurrency profiling, and containerized production operations such as Kubernetes. GitLab's culture embraces AI as a core productivity multiplier, with all team members expected to incorporate AI into daily workflows.
