Feathery is an AI Operating & Decisioning system for financial services, trusted by Fortune 500 companies like Allstate to power mission-critical workflows including customer onboarding, insurance underwriting, quoting, account openings, and advisor transitions. As a Senior Backend Engineer, you will design, build, and scale the core infrastructure powering Feathery's document intelligence and workflow platform. This high-ownership role blends backend system design, distributed architecture, infrastructure optimization, and product-focused engineering. Key responsibilities include: - Design and build backend services for document processing and workflow automation, ensuring high availability, fault tolerance, and observability - Develop asynchronous pipelines and distributed systems to handle large data volumes using AWS services and queueing systems like SQS - Build systems for processing and transforming structured and unstructured data, integrating external services such as OCR and AI models - Improve reliability and throughput of document and data processing pipelines - Contribute to APIs and internal services that power the product - Work closely with product, frontend, and customer-facing teams to define requirements and ship impactful features - Translate complex customer needs into scalable backend solutions - Take ownership of key backend systems and architecture decisions - Mentor other engineers and contribute to engineering best practices - Help improve code quality, testing, and deployment processes You should have 4–7+ years of experience building and scaling backend systems with strong proficiency in Node.js, Django, or similar frameworks. You'll need solid experience designing distributed systems, asynchronous processing pipelines, and working with AWS cloud infrastructure. Strong understanding of system performance, reliability, and observability is essential, along with experience building production-grade APIs and services. Bonus qualifications include experience with data processing/ETL pipelines, document processing, OCR, AI/ML integrations, queueing systems, event-driven architectures, high-throughput optimization, and background in financial services or B2B SaaS environments.
