Antithesis is reinventing software reliability by running entire software systems inside deterministic simulations to identify bugs with perfect reproductions. The company addresses a critical verification bottleneck in an era of AI-generated code, where speed of development outpaces quality assurance.
As a Senior Backend Engineer on the Platform team, you will design and own core infrastructure systems end-to-end, from low-level binary formats and storage optimization to high-level customer-facing APIs. You'll contribute to Pangolin, a purpose-built database designed for the platform's unique demands, and build foundational primitives including data access layers, authorization frameworks, and service orchestration.
Key responsibilities include:
- Designing, building, and operating core platform systems including backend infrastructure, data processing pipelines, and scalable APIs
- Contributing to the development and evolution of Pangolin database
- Building and maintaining foundational platform primitives
- Owning reliability end-to-end: system design, capacity planning, incident response, and on-call rotation
- Identifying and resolving performance bottlenecks across the stack
- Mentoring engineers and contributing to long-term technical strategy
You should have 5+ years of software engineering experience with strong systems design fundamentals. Rust experience is strongly preferred, though exceptional systems engineers from other backgrounds are welcome. You need hands-on experience building APIs, services, storage engines, query engines, or data-intensive backend systems, plus deep understanding of distributed systems (consistency, fault tolerance, replication, observability). Experience with query planning/optimization, multi-tenant platforms, authorization systems, C/C++, or open-source contributions is a bonus.
The team values engineering quality above all, with diverse backgrounds spanning computer science, mathematics, philosophy, and self-taught engineers. The role is in-office in Vienna, VA, where the team works together to tackle hard problems.
