Verkada is a rapidly scaling physical AI platform protecting organizations through integrated video security, access control, air quality sensors, alarms, intercoms, and visitor management. The company serves 30,000+ customers including 100+ Fortune 500 companies, has achieved a $5.8B valuation, and operates 2+ million deployed devices across 170+ countries.
You'll join a small, dynamic team building cloud-managed access control systems—positioned as a startup within the larger organization. The Access Control product line enables users to manage doors, schedules, and credentials from laptop or phone, with significant autonomy and ownership.
In this role, you will architect and develop backend systems for access control, working alongside firmware, backend, and frontend engineers. You'll tackle large, complex distributed systems problems with incomplete specifications, drive products from concept to completion, and own technical leadership of major systems. The team values best-in-class product experiences over feature checklists, self-motivated problem-solving, and continuous learning.
You'll need 5+ years of industry software engineering experience, a BS/MS in Computer Science or related field, and proficiency in server languages like Python or Go. Strong experience with scalable distributed systems (databases, queues, blob storage) is essential. The role requires full-time onsite presence five days per week in San Mateo. Verkada sponsors employment visas and offers comprehensive benefits including 100% employee health premium coverage, mental health support, parental leave, flexible PTO, professional development stipend, and daily healthy lunches.
