As Senior Application Database Engineer, you will own the database infrastructure strategy and execution as the platform scales. This is a hands-on role requiring deep technical expertise across multiple database technologies and cloud platforms.
Key responsibilities include:
- Manage MongoDB Atlas clusters across production, staging, and development environments spanning multiple regions on AWS and Azure
- Lead schema and data model design, making deliberate choices around embedding, referencing, denormalization, and aggregation patterns
- Own index strategy, query performance analysis, and aggregation pipeline optimization
- Evaluate database technology decisions, determining when MongoDB is appropriate versus relational stores like Amazon RDS
- Design and execute data migrations between database systems, writing Python tooling for migration pipelines
- Manage all Atlas infrastructure through Terraform, including cluster sizing, auto-scaling, private endpoints, and access control
- Design and maintain OIDC authentication and workforce identity federation
- Monitor database performance, identify bottlenecks, and drive optimization across replica sets and sharded clusters
- Partner with backend engineers on schema design and query performance
- Establish operational runbooks for failover, scaling, and incident response
Required experience: 5+ years with MongoDB in production including Atlas-managed clusters; strong schema design skills around access patterns; deep understanding of indexing, query planning, and aggregation pipelines; solid experience with Amazon RDS or other relational databases; strong SQL skills; Python proficiency for scripting and automation; experience with database migrations; Terraform expertise; hands-on AWS and Azure networking knowledge; ability to operate autonomously in a fast-moving environment; strong written communication.
Nice-to-have skills include Atlas Terraform provider experience, OIDC and workforce identity federation familiarity, multi-region data architecture background, and healthcare/regulated industry experience.
