Epidemic Sound is a global music licensing and discovery platform with 400+ employees across offices in Stockholm, London, New York, Los Angeles, Berlin, Paris, Oslo, and Seoul. The company serves creators and influencers who need high-quality music for their content, with a startup mentality and industry-leading position.
You will join the Mobile Experience team as a Senior Android Engineer, working on the Epidemic Sound app—a product built specifically for mobile creators who discover and license music on the go. The team is small and cohesive: four senior engineers (two Android, two iOS) operating with minimal process overhead, high autonomy, and a focus on shipping quality features that delight users.
Key responsibilities:
- Own features end-to-end: identify opportunities, prototype rapidly, ship to production, measure impact, and iterate based on user feedback.
- Build polished, custom UI using Jetpack Compose with meticulous attention to design and user experience details.
- Work on music playback and audio features—the most technically demanding aspects of the app.
- Maintain app health: architecture, performance, accessibility, OS updates, API deprecations, and releases.
- Contribute to the Kotlin backend-for-frontend, CI pipelines, and developer tooling as needed.
- Integrate AI agents into your development workflow and help the team discover new applications.
- Share knowledge through code review, pair programming, and clear technical communication.
The team values strong opinions loosely held, low ego, and a commitment to quality. There is no fixed roadmap; the team decides together what's worth building. The codebase is mature, modular, and well-maintained with minimal legacy code, so you'll spend time building rather than paying down technical debt.
Requirements:
- 6+ years of professional Android development in Kotlin.
- Deep experience with Jetpack Compose, particularly building complex custom UI with strong design sensibility and polish.
- Solid command of Kotlin coroutines and Flow.
- Shipped and maintained production apps for years, including handling platform changes and API deprecations without breaking user experience.
- Ability to understand and explain complex topics: performance, accessibility, and architecture.
- Hands-on experience with agentic engineering—using AI agents as development tools and owning the quality of their output.
- Initiative and self-direction; you identify what needs doing and execute without requiring assigned tickets.
Nice-to-have:
- Audio and playback experience, ideally Media3 / ExoPlayer.
- Gradle and large multi-module codebase experience.
- End-to-end ownership of shipped features from conception through measurement and iteration.
- Design system work.
- CI workflow design and maintenance.
- Production Kotlin backend experience.
- UX design skills in Figma or similar tools.
Tech stack: Kotlin, Jetpack Compose, coroutines, Flow, Hilt, Media3 / ExoPlayer, Room, DataStore, Retrofit, OkHttp, Gradle with version catalogs, custom Android lint checks, GitHub Actions.
