Salary: USD 182,800 - 247,300 / annual
Join Duolingo's Application Stability and Performance team as a Senior Android Engineer, where you'll own the stability and performance of the Duolingo Android Learning app serving millions of learners worldwide.
You'll lead architectural initiatives to optimize the slowest parts of the app, from startup to critical learning flows. The team builds essential tooling that other engineers depend on, including AI-driven crash and memory analysis, coroutine system tracing, and Macrobenchmark suites that catch regressions before they ship. You'll also own performance metrics that feed into experiment analyses, helping ensure hundreds of concurrent experiments surface any performance issues.
Key responsibilities include:
- Leading architectural initiatives to fix performance bottlenecks across the app
- Owning and evolving performance tooling with tracing, benchmarking, and automated regression detection
- Serving as a bridge between Client Platform and Product feature teams, helping them understand and act on performance data
- Fostering a culture of engineering excellence around performance and mentoring engineers of all levels
Required qualifications:
- Shipped large-scale Android applications
- Experience identifying and resolving ANRs, memory leaks, dropped frames, and complex crashes
- Strong Kotlin skills with deep familiarity with coroutines, Jetpack Compose, and modern architecture patterns
- Experience optimizing startup time, memory, and network usage for low-memory devices
- Strong problem-solving skills and passion for tackling difficult technical challenges
Exceptional candidates will have expertise in Android tracing tooling (AndroidX Tracing Library, Perfetto) and crash observability tools (Sentry, Android Vitals).
