Salary: USD 182,800 - 247,300 / annual
Duolingo is seeking a Senior Android Engineer to join the Application Stability and Performance team, responsible for maintaining and improving the stability and performance of the Duolingo Android Learning app used by millions of learners worldwide.
In this role, you will own critical performance initiatives across the app, from startup optimization to core learning flows. You'll architect and implement solutions to address the slowest parts of the application, ensuring a smooth experience for users on low-memory devices and across diverse network conditions.
Key responsibilities include:
- Leading architectural initiatives to optimize app performance across startup, memory usage, and critical user flows
- Building and evolving performance tooling including tracing systems, benchmarking suites, and automated regression detection
- Developing AI-driven crash and memory analysis tools that other engineers depend on
- Serving as a technical bridge between the Client Platform team and Product feature teams, translating performance data into actionable insights
- Mentoring engineers of all levels and fostering a culture of engineering excellence around performance
- Owning performance metrics that feed into experiment analyses, ensuring hundreds of concurrent A/B tests surface any regressions
Required qualifications:
- Extensive experience shipping large-scale Android applications
- Deep expertise identifying and resolving ANRs, memory leaks, dropped frames, and complex crashes
- Strong Kotlin proficiency with hands-on experience with coroutines, Jetpack Compose, and modern architecture patterns
- Proven ability optimizing startup time, memory, and network usage for resource-constrained devices
- Strong problem-solving skills and passion for tackling difficult technical challenges
Preferred qualifications:
- Expertise with Android tracing tools (AndroidX Tracing Library, Perfetto)
- Experience with crash observability platforms (Sentry, Android Vitals)
This is an individual contributor role focused on technical excellence and mentorship, not people management.
