Sekai is building an AI-driven consumer platform for creating, remixing, sharing, and playing interactive content—described as "TikTok for mini apps." The company is Series A-backed by Khosla, a16z, Mayfield, and A* with $30M raised, operating as a remote-first team.
As Senior Android Engineer, you will own the native Android foundation for Sekai's mobile product. This is an Android-first role focused on the core app shell, native platform architecture, product quality, release reliability, and hybrid integration with React Native, Flutter, and web-based experiences.
Key responsibilities include building and owning Sekai's native Android foundation using Kotlin and modern Android architecture; designing and improving the app shell, navigation, lifecycle handling, session management, permissions, push notifications, deeplinks, and release workflows; creating clean integration points for product modules built in native Android, React Native, Flutter, or WebView; partnering with Product, Design, Backend, and Mobile teams to ship high-quality consumer experiences; improving app reliability, responsiveness, maintainability, and production quality across real-world devices; building observability and debugging workflows for crashes and app health; defining engineering patterns for native modules, cross-stack communication, and testing; and leveraging modern AI development tools to move faster while maintaining quality.
You should have 5+ years of professional Android engineering experience with strong hands-on expertise in Kotlin, Android SDK, and production app development. You must have shipped major parts of consumer-facing Android apps and understand Android architecture deeply—including app lifecycle, navigation, concurrency, networking, persistence, dependency management, and modularization. Experience with Jetpack Compose and/or traditional Android View systems is required. Strong product sense, care for mobile UX polish and reliability, and ability to make independent architecture decisions are essential. You should thrive in fast-paced startup environments with strong ownership mindset and ability to collaborate closely across Product, Design, Backend, Mobile, and Growth teams.
Preferred experience includes leading mobile app development from 0 to 1, working in startups or high-growth consumer products, React Native hybrid architecture, Flutter or WebView integration, Android performance profiling and app health monitoring, mobile observability tools (Firebase Crashlytics, Sentry, Datadog, Amplitude), feed-based or social/entertainment/creator products, Gradle and CI/CD automation, and familiarity with iOS, TypeScript, or AI coding tools like Cursor or Claude Code.
