Ivo is a contract intelligence platform that uses AI to automate legal document review and analysis. The company serves enterprise customers including Uber, Meta, Canva, IBM, and Shopify, and recently completed a Series B funding round with 800% YoY growth.
As a Senior AI Researcher, you will lead research initiatives that push the state of the art in applying large language models and deep learning to legal domain challenges. You'll own a complete research roadmap: identifying high-impact problems, designing and running experiments, prototyping solutions, and shipping winning approaches into production alongside the engineering team.
Key responsibilities include:
- Advancing Ivo's core AI platform by designing novel approaches to reasoning over long-context legal documents, contract comparison and redlining, information extraction, and automated drafting.
- Building trustworthy models through research on hallucination detection and mitigation, calibration, and explainability—critical in legal contexts where accuracy is non-negotiable.
- Exploring and implementing advanced techniques including fine-tuning, parameter-efficient fine-tuning (PEFT), quantization, and distillation to optimize model performance, speed, and cost on legal-specific tasks.
- Evaluating emerging research in agentic systems, long-context modeling, and reasoning to determine practical impact for customers.
- Designing and maintaining datasets, benchmarks, and evaluation frameworks that measure model performance on complex legal text and define metrics that matter.
- Partnering with Engineering and Product to move prototypes from research notebooks to production, writing technical reports that influence platform direction, and presenting findings across the company.
Required qualifications include a Ph.D. in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, Physics, or related quantitative field (or equivalent industry research experience). You must demonstrate exceptional ability through publications, shipped systems, open-source contributions, or solved hard problems. Deep hands-on experience with deep learning research and LLMs is essential, along with strong proficiency in modern frameworks (PyTorch, JAX, or TensorFlow). Expertise in at least one area—agentic systems, reasoning, PEFT, quantization, inference optimization, hallucination mitigation, novel architectures, or robust LLM evaluation—is required. Excellent communication skills and a bias toward action (shipping over perfecting, measuring over guessing) are critical.
Nice-to-have qualifications include publications at top ML/AI venues (NeurIPS, AAAI, ICML, ICLR) or peer-reviewed journals, experience with long-context modeling in high-stakes domains (legal, medical, financial), prior work on hallucination detection or interpretability, and a track record building in fast-paced startups or research environments.
