Arcturus is developing a novel wire technology stack using carbon nanomaterials to overcome performance limitations of traditional metals in high-temperature applications. The company focuses on improving electric motors for drones and robotics, heat sinks, and energy grid infrastructure.
As Senior Additive Manufacturing Engineer, you will be an early technical hire responsible for executing and advancing Arcturus' metal additive manufacturing workflows. This is a hands-on role requiring direct involvement in LPBF (Laser Powder Bed Fusion), DED (Directed Energy Deposition), and related metal processing techniques applied to aluminum and copper systems infused with carbon nanomaterials.
Key responsibilities include:
- Support metal AM experiments across LPBF, DED, and related processes for carbon nanomaterial-infused systems
- Prepare builds, define layouts, develop orientation and support strategies, and execute design-for-additive-manufacturing decisions
- Develop and refine print parameters, scan strategies, thermal management approaches, and process recipes
- Handle powder and feedstock management, machine operation, post-processing, and comprehensive documentation
- Diagnose and troubleshoot print defects including porosity, cracking, distortion, bonding issues, and surface quality problems
- Collaborate with nanomaterials, process, and testing teams to correlate print parameters with electrical, thermal, mechanical, and microstructural performance
- Build and maintain fixture designs, CAD files, build records, process documentation, and experiment summaries
- Execute DOE-style experimentation, repeatability studies, and root-cause investigations
- Coordinate with vendors, machine shops, external labs, and equipment suppliers
Required qualifications: BS/MS/PhD in mechanical engineering, materials science, manufacturing engineering, welding engineering, metallurgical engineering, physics, or related field. Minimum 2+ years hands-on experience in additive manufacturing, metal processing, powder metallurgy, laser processing, welding, or closely related field. Demonstrated experience with at least one relevant process (LPBF, DED, WAAM, powder metallurgy, laser processing, welding, or metal AM post-processing). Strong hands-on engineering instincts, lab/shop comfort, experimental execution ability, problem-solving skills, and technical documentation expertise. High ownership mentality and startup environment adaptability required.
Preferred: Direct LPBF or DED experience, background with aluminum/copper/conductors/metal matrix composites, familiarity with AM build preparation tools and CAD/slicing/support generation, powder handling and materials characterization experience, DOE and statistical analysis knowledge, startup or advanced manufacturing team background.
