Vertical Semiconductor, a venture-backed MIT spin-out, is developing vertical gallium nitride (GaN) power electronics for next-generation compute and AI applications. We're seeking a Semiconductor Process Engineer to join our fabrication team in a hands-on role focused on executing process steps reliably and efficiently.
You will spend the majority of your time in the cleanroom fabricating devices and test structures. Working closely with the fabrication team, you'll receive training on each process step and share responsibility for device fabrication from start to finish. The role emphasizes practical skill-building across a wide range of microfabrication techniques, with direct visibility into how your work translates into working devices.
Key responsibilities include executing end-to-end process recipes while maintaining strict adherence to documentation and run logs; supporting fast iteration on fabrication cycles by optimizing tool scheduling and handoffs; performing routine inspections to verify process quality and flag deviations early; assisting with substrate preparation and wafer dicing; maintaining clear, accurate process records for troubleshooting and knowledge sharing; coordinating tool reservations in a shift-based coverage model; and contributing to process improvements and exploratory work as capacity allows.
Required qualifications: B.S., M.S., or Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering, Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, Physics, or related field; prior hands-on cleanroom experience; familiarity with standard microfabrication processes (photolithography, deposition, wet/dry etching, metallization); comfort operating sensitive cleanroom equipment per detailed SOPs; willingness to work flexible schedules including early mornings, late evenings, and weekends; strong attention to detail and disciplined record-keeping; collaborative, hands-on mentality with drive to learn quickly in a startup environment.
Nice-to-have qualifications include direct GaN, SiC, or compound semiconductor processing experience; probe station measurements or device characterization experience; wafer dicing and substrate handling familiarity; process development or yield improvement exposure; and patent material development experience.
This is an on-site role based in Somerville, MA with flexible scheduling to support extended laboratory access. Compensation is competitive and commensurate with experience, including stock options.
