Exa is building a search engine from scratch to serve AI applications, operating massive-scale infrastructure including web crawling, state-of-the-art embedding model training, and high-performance vector databases in Rust. The company manages a $5M H200 GPU cluster and serves thousands of enterprise customers.
You will be hired as a Security Engineer to build and maintain the protective infrastructure across all of Exa's systems—from web-scale data processing and indexing hundreds of billions of pages to training foundational models on terabytes of data and serving enterprise endpoints. This is a hands-on role where you'll be critical to ensuring Exa operates securely while maintaining shipping velocity.
Key responsibilities include:
- Designing and maintaining secure cloud infrastructure, particularly multi-account AWS architectures and IAM frameworks
- Implementing and managing secrets management, key management, and certificate lifecycle automation across distributed services, training jobs, and GPU clusters
- Owning compliance initiatives (SOC2, HIPAA, etc.) and ensuring adherence to security standards
- Building monitoring and alerting systems to detect anomalous behavior across APIs, internal services, and customer usage
- Developing security hardening practices and maintaining secure development environments (VPN, development servers)
- Creating and leading security incident response playbooks, from detection through post-mortem analysis
- Staying vigilant about emerging vulnerabilities and attack vectors, particularly as new technologies (OS-level changes, AI coding agents) are introduced
You should have hands-on experience building and maintaining secure infrastructure at scale, deep knowledge of cloud security fundamentals, and fluency in secrets and key management. Experience owning compliance efforts is highly valued. The role is in-person in San Francisco; the company sponsors international candidates (STEM OPT, H1B, O1, E3).
