Writer is an enterprise generative AI platform valued at $1.9B, used by leading companies like Mars, Marriott, Uber, and Vanguard to build and deploy AI agents grounded in proprietary data. As a Security Engineer in Application Security, you'll build security foundations protecting AI systems at enterprise scale, working at the intersection of application security, AI infrastructure, and developer enablement.
Key responsibilities include conducting threat modeling for LLM architectures, establishing and maintaining SAST/DAST scanning in CI/CD pipelines, and designing secure architectures for new features. You'll own the application security program, partner with engineering teams to establish secure coding standards, and design security controls for data pipelines, model training environments, and customer-facing AI agents. You'll lead security assessments and penetration testing across Writer's applications, APIs, and AI services, while staying ahead of emerging threats specific to LLMs and generative AI.
You'll also design and recommend security features that help secure customer environments, integrate AI agents to increase security team velocity, and create reusable security patterns that make it easier for developers to build securely by default. This role emphasizes a builder's mindset—automating, scaling, and empowering rather than creating bottlenecks.
Required: minimum 4 years of hands-on application security engineering experience in large-scale production systems, preferably in fast-growing startups. You need technical expertise in at least two programming languages (Python, Java, Go, JavaScript/TypeScript), knowledge of SAST/DAST solutions and DevSecOps practices, and excellent communication skills to translate complex security concepts for technical and non-technical audiences. Understanding of developer experience and workflows is essential. The role reports to the head of security engineering and is open to Mid, Senior, and Staff level candidates.
