Helsing is a defence AI company focused on protecting democracies through technological leadership. This Senior Mechanical Engineer role is based in Barcelona and sits at the core of Helsing's robotics engineering function, responsible for driving the mechanical architecture, design, and development of next-generation robotic systems for defence applications. You will own complex electromechanical systems from concept through production, ensuring platforms are robust, scalable, and built for real-world deployment. Key responsibilities include leading detailed design and integration of complex robotic subsystems (high-precision actuators, structural chassis, dynamic motion systems), translating concepts into robust 3D assemblies and comprehensive engineering drawing packages. You'll drive cross-functional integration with electrical and software teams to ensure seamless packaging, cable routing, thermal and sensor integration, and resolve technical challenges across the full development cycle. You will define material selection strategies and fabrication methods, conducting FEA, stress analysis, and tolerance stack-up analysis to ensure designs meet rigorous functional, cost, yield, and lead-time requirements. You'll establish and advocate for mechanical engineering best practices, including modelling standards, GD&T drawing controls, and technical documentation. In design reviews, you'll critically evaluate system architectures, identify risks, and deliver high-impact solutions that optimise performance and manufacturability from prototype through production ramp-up. Ideal candidates have shipped complex robotic, mechatronic, or automated systems to market with verifiable ownership across the full product development cycle. Expert-level proficiency in 3D CAD (ideally SolidWorks) and deep knowledge of GD&T for precision manufacturing are essential. You should have applied structural and thermal FEA, static simulations, and tolerance stack-up analysis to real engineering problems in production-grade systems, and worked extensively across diverse manufacturing processes (CNC machining, injection moulding, sheet metal fabrication, additive manufacturing) in high-mix or low-to-medium volume environments. Strong communication skills for conveying complex technical decisions to cross-functional stakeholders are critical.
