Salary: CAD 120,000 - 150,000 / annual
ProteinQure is a computational drug discovery platform company focused on peptide therapeutics. The company combines biophysical modeling, statistical methods, and machine learning to design novel protein therapeutics targeting extracellular proteins. ProteinQure has partnerships with three of the top 25 pharma companies and operates multiple internal clinical programs, including a Phase 1 trial for a first-in-class peptide drug conjugate for triple-negative breast cancer.
The Research Software Engineer will develop, maintain, and support the computational platform that enables ProteinQure's drug discovery research. This role bridges software engineering and scientific research, translating researcher needs into reliable, reproducible software tools and workflows. The engineer will own scoped projects from requirements through deployment, provide technical support to scientific users, and contribute to shared engineering practices and code quality.
Key responsibilities:
- Develop and maintain scientific computational workflows and tools for protein property prediction and optimization
- Scope computational resource requirements for internal and external research projects
- Gather product requirements from scientists and translate them into technical specifications
- Support development of machine learning models
- Participate in code reviews, own improvements from requirements through deployment, and provide ongoing support
- Debug, troubleshoot, and resolve technical issues in production systems
Reports to the Head of Engineering. This is a permanent, full-time position.
REQUIREMENTS:
- 3–5 years of software development experience
- Proficiency in Python with demonstrated experience maintaining software used by others (debugging, testing, dependency management)
- Experience using AI-assisted development tools with independent review, testing, and validation of generated code; appropriate handling of confidential information
- Familiarity with Linux environments, shell scripting, and troubleshooting software execution issues
- Ability to prioritize development tasks alongside support requests, communicate tradeoffs, and recognize when to seek guidance
- Excellent English communication skills (verbal and written)
- Legal authorization to work in Canada
Nice-to-have:
- DevOps experience
- Kubernetes experience
- Experience with computer hardware or on-premises servers
- Background in cell, molecular, or protein biology
