OpenAI's Personalization-Memory team is seeking a Research Engineer or Research Scientist to develop agents that learn from prior interactions and become more helpful over time. The role focuses on building general-purpose memory and personalization capabilities that transfer across ChatGPT and other agentic products, with close collaboration between research and applied engineering teams.
You will own and pursue a research agenda for improving long-horizon memory and personalization in frontier models. Key responsibilities include building robust evaluations for tracking modeling improvements, designing and implementing code across the research stack, and collaborating with research and product teams to influence technical solutions. The work spans memory architecture, post-training methodologies, and developing long-horizon tasks for training and evaluation.
The ideal candidate has a strong background in reinforcement learning research, can iterate quickly, and excels at converting scientific rigor into realized product impact. You should love being on the cutting edge of RL and frontier model research, value principled approaches and research craftsmanship, and are passionate about long-horizon tasks and memory. Comfort diving into large ML codebases to debug and thriving in fast-paced, dynamic, technically complex environments is essential.
