Neo4j is seeking a Research Engineer to join its UK-based team in London to advance the Aurendil project—a next-generation graph database runtime. This role involves end-to-end development of a novel database system architecture, from theoretical design through implementation and evaluation. You will work on a cross-disciplinary team of post-doctoral researchers to build a radical new query language runtime for graph databases, informed by advances in programming language technologies.
The ideal candidate brings deep expertise in systems research, including query languages, databases, compilers, parallel computing, distributed systems, or hardware acceleration. Specific backgrounds of interest include: query language implementation, programming language design and implementation, compiler construction (LLVM, x86, ARM), managed runtimes (JVM, GraalVM), database internals, parallel or distributed computing, and hardware acceleration (GPGPUs, FPGAs, smart NICs).
You will participate in designing and implementing the Aurendil prototype from scratch, then disseminate results to both Neo4j product teams and the academic research community. Strong systems programming experience in C++, Java, or Rust is beneficial. This is a research-focused role, so prior experience in academic or industrial research environments and familiarity with research practices are expected.
