Salary: USD 500,000 - 850,000 / annual
Anthropic is seeking a Research Engineer to join its Agents team, focused on making Claude an increasingly effective agent for complex, long-horizon tasks. The role sits at the intersection of research and engineering, tackling the nascent but rapidly growing field of agentic AI systems.
You will ideate, develop, and compare different agent harnesses—including memory systems, context compression, and communication architectures for multi-agent coordination. You'll design and implement rigorous quantitative benchmarks for large-scale agentic tasks, assist with automated evaluation of Claude models and prompts across training and product lifecycles, and collaborate with the product organization to solve real-world challenges in deploying agents to production systems. You'll also help create and optimize data mixes for model training that maximize Claude's performance on agentic tasks.
Ideal candidates have significant experience developing complex agentic systems using LLMs, strong software engineering and ML fundamentals, and hands-on experience prompting and building products with language models. You should be collaborative, stay current with emerging research, and have a genuine interest in making powerful AI systems safe and beneficial. Experience with large-scale reinforcement learning on language models and multi-agent systems is a plus.
The role is hybrid with flexibility across Anthropic's San Francisco, Seattle, and New York offices, though remote-friendly arrangements are available. Candidates should be prepared to share a portfolio project demonstrating their ability to get LLMs to perform complex tasks—whether that's novel agent design, quantitative prompting experiments, benchmark construction, synthetic data generation, or model finetuning.
