X.ai (SpaceXSI) is seeking a Regulatory Legal Counsel for EMEA to advise on platform, AI, and digital regulation across Europe, the UK, the Middle East, and Africa. The role focuses on ensuring X, Grok, and other AI products comply with some of the world's most demanding regulatory regimes, including the EU Digital Services Act, UK Online Safety Act, and EU AI Act.
You will translate complex regulatory obligations into clear, practical advice and implementation plans. Working closely with Safety, Product, Engineering, Policy, Compliance, and other Legal teams, you will drive regulatory compliance across the full product lifecycle. Key responsibilities include:
- Advising on implementation and compliance with EU, UK, and EMEA digital regulations, with particular focus on the EU AI Act, Digital Services Act (DSA), UK Online Safety Act (OSA), Audiovisual Media Services Directive (AVMSD), Ireland's Online Safety Code, and the eCommerce Directive.
- Supporting regulatory engagement and investigations with the European Commission, EU AI Office, Ofcom, Coimisiún na Meán, and other regulators, including handling requests for information, risk assessments, audits, consultations, transparency reporting, and enforcement proceedings.
- Working cross-functionally to assess new features and AI products against regulatory requirements, including systemic risk and illegal content risk assessments, age assurance and minor protection, content moderation, advertising transparency, researcher data access, and AI transparency obligations.
- Tracking and analyzing new legislation, codes of practice, guidelines, and enforcement trends across EMEA, translating them into clear product implications.
- Building scalable compliance processes, templates, and playbooks for product review and regulatory compliance.
- Partnering with Compliance, Product Counsel, Privacy, Litigation, and Policy teams to maintain consistent positions across jurisdictions.
- Managing outside counsel relationships effectively and cost-consciously.
- Supporting the broader legal department as needed.
- Actively using AI products daily to accelerate learning and optimize productivity.
This is a hands-on role for someone who enjoys understanding how products actually work, can move quickly between legal analysis and practical implementation, and is comfortable engaging directly with regulators. You will be close to product development and regulatory strategy, not siloed in traditional legal work.
REQUIREMENTS:
- Qualified lawyer in good standing, ideally with UK and/or EU qualification.
- Ideally 5+ years of legal experience in technology, platform, or digital regulation, at a top-tier law firm, in-house at a technology company, or at a regulator.
- Strong working knowledge of the DSA and/or UK OSA; while deep experience in every framework is not required, candidates should have solid grounding in some combination of the listed regulatory areas.
- Strong understanding of the legislative process and the technology industry.
- Exceptional communication skills with ability to explain complex ideas succinctly and impactfully.
- Ability to work effectively with technical and non-legal teams and to understand how products work.
- Strong sense of ownership, sound judgment, and ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
- Commitment to in-office presence 5 days per week.
PREFERRED:
- Experience with the EU AI Act, AVMSD, or Ireland's Online Safety Code.
- Experience responding to regulatory requests for information or investigations from the European Commission, Ofcom, or Coimisiún na Meán.
- In-house or secondment experience at a social media, consumer platform, or AI company.
- Familiarity with GDPR, consumer protection, and advertising regulation.
- Contentious legal experience.
- Additional European languages.
