Commonwealth Fusion Systems is seeking an R&D Test Engineer to develop novel fluid systems for research and development test stands, with a primary focus on supporting magnet testing for fusion energy applications. The role combines mechanical and chemical engineering fundamentals to design and build fluid systems across a broad range of process fluids including liquid, gaseous, cryogenic, supercritical, and molten salt systems. Responsibilities include designing and building test stands at varying scales—from smaller-scale systems requiring deep analysis to larger, complex projects supporting SPARC and ARC fusion reactor programs. The engineer will actively commission systems, design automation, and operate test equipment alongside a team of test engineers, software engineers, and operators. The role requires strong collaboration across production, R&D, procurement, and the SPARC team. The ideal candidate is resourceful and creative, combining industry best practices with off-the-shelf and customized hardware to deliver solutions on tight timelines. The position may require flexing into adjacent disciplines such as structures and materials engineering to retire technical risks for SPARC and ARC programs. This is a hands-on role that balances design, build, and operational responsibilities in a fast-paced, mission-driven environment focused on advancing commercial fusion energy.
