Commonwealth Fusion Systems is seeking an R&D Engineer to develop and test high voltage systems for superconducting magnets used in fusion energy applications. The role focuses on the Paschen effect—the behavior of electrical breakdown in high and poor vacuum conditions—which is critical for protecting fusion-relevant superconducting magnets from high voltage transients. You will design, build, and commission test equipment and software to support development, qualification, and production testing of high voltage systems in vacuum environments. Key responsibilities include executing and developing comprehensive test campaigns, leading root cause and corrective action (RCCA) efforts through analysis and testing to resolve issues with SPARC and ARC magnets currently in production, and supporting tokamak integration and commissioning activities. This is a multidisciplinary role requiring seamless collaboration across mechanical, electrical, materials, fluids, and software engineering domains. You will work closely with manufacturing, R&D, procurement, and SPARC teams to execute test campaigns on aggressive schedules. A critical aspect of the role is challenging and refining requirements, risks, and test objectives with stakeholders to build consensus on test necessity and identify essential data outcomes. The ideal candidate has a fundamental understanding of high voltage systems in vacuum, with hands-on experience in test design, equipment development, and data analysis. You should be comfortable working in a fast-paced, mission-driven environment where technical rigor and collaborative problem-solving are essential to advancing fusion energy commercialization.
