Impulse is seeking a Radiation Effects Engineer to contribute to the design, testing, and delivery of flight hardware systems for space missions ranging from low Earth orbit to Mars. This role sits at the intersection of component engineering and spacecraft reliability, requiring deep expertise in radiation effects on electronics. You will lead total ionizing dose (TID) and single event effects (SEE) component characterization and qualification efforts, working through both testing campaigns and rigorous data analysis. A key responsibility is developing and maintaining radiation test procedures, optimizing test time and resource allocation for off-site testing campaigns. You'll build and maintain comprehensive databases of radiation test data across the component portfolio, serving as a critical resource for design engineers and supply chain teams making procurement decisions. On the design side, you'll create radiation design standards that electrical engineers use to maximize on-orbit reliability, and review circuit board designs and bills of materials to ensure compliance. You'll perform ray-tracing shielding analysis of avionics enclosures and contribute to vehicle-level radiation risk assessment. Cross-functional collaboration is essential—you'll interface regularly with electrical, RF, EMC, mechanical, and test engineers, as well as program managers and engineering leadership to ensure radiation risks are accurately represented in program planning. The role requires a Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Physics, or a related technical field, plus 2+ years of hands-on experience in radiation effects. You should have strong component selection experience across digital, analog, power, and RF systems, and direct experience supporting proton and/or heavy ion radiation testing campaigns. Ability to analyze radiation test data at circuit, board, and vehicle levels is essential. Experience integrating industrial and automotive-grade parts in radiation environments is valued. Occasional domestic travel to support radiation test campaigns is expected.
