Infleqtion is seeking a Quantum Software Engineer to conduct R&D on quantum computing applications in nuclear physics. This role bridges theoretical quantum algorithms with practical nuclear physics problems, requiring deep expertise in both domains. Key responsibilities include: developing and testing quantum algorithms for nuclear physics applications (QCD, EFT, many-body problems); collaborating with experimental physicists and software engineers to translate theory into implementation; interfacing with external groups and government/commercial partners on nuclear quantum proposals; publishing research and presenting at conferences; mentoring team members; and staying current with quantum computing and nuclear physics advances. You will work with open-source quantum frameworks (Cirq, Qiskit, Stim), apply quantum algorithms like QPE, VQE, and Hamiltonian Simulation, and contribute to a collaborative research environment. The role requires fluency in Python and familiarity with AI/ML concepts. Required qualifications: BS/MS in Computer Science, Physics, Applied Mathematics, Electrical Engineering, or related field; strong programming skills (Python preferred); deep knowledge of nuclear physics fundamentals and at least one subfield; hands-on experience with quantum algorithms for physical science; experience modifying open-source quantum software frameworks; excellent cross-functional communication; and ability to work in a fast-paced, dynamic environment. Preferred: PhD in quantum computation, physics, or related field; expertise in quantum error correction, fault tolerance, and variational algorithms; backend development experience (FastAPI, PostgreSQL); cloud development (GCP, AWS); CI/CD and GitHub proficiency; security best practices; and front-end/GUI development exposure. Hybrid role requiring 3 days/week in Chicago office with up to 10% domestic/international travel.
