Salary: USD 139,000 - 157,000 / annual
Muon Space, an end-to-end space systems provider designing and building LEO satellite constellations, seeks a Mechanical Quality Engineer to join its San Jose, CA facility. This is a hands-on, senior individual contributor role focused on quality assurance for high-reliability spaceflight hardware.
You will own quality across machined parts and mechanical assemblies from incoming inspection through integration and test. Key responsibilities include:
**Inspection & Testing:** Plan, execute, and oversee inspection, integration, and testing of satellites and sub-assemblies down to component level. Verify conformance to internal specifications, engineering drawings, and GD&T per ASME Y14.5. Perform dimensional inspection, mechanical fit checks, and support necessary testing.
**Nonconformance & Corrective Action:** Lead root-cause analysis and corrective action disposition. Develop and maintain nonconformance tracking systems. Work directly with in-house machine shop, Supplier Quality Engineers, and vendors during investigations.
**Quality Management System & Documentation:** Build out and maintain the Quality Management System. Author internal specifications, workmanship standards, and work instructions. Interpret and develop quality assurance standards. Document quality activities through reporting, audits, quality plans, inspection records, test reports, and nonconformance reports.
**Process Improvement:** Analyze inspection, nonconformance management, and assembly processes to identify quality improvement opportunities and drive corrective actions.
**Compliance & Standards:** Ensure adherence to industry standards (ISO 9001, AS9100) and aerospace/spacecraft manufacturing regulations, including material and process considerations for space environments (outgassing, thermal properties).
**Data Analysis:** Collect and analyze data from tests, inspections, and audits to monitor quality trends and provide insights using quality management software or data analysis platforms.
**Collaboration & Training:** Partner with mechanical, electrical, design, manufacturing, and test engineers to resolve quality issues. Provide training on GD&T, internal standards, inspection criteria, systems, policies, and core processes.
**Supplier Audits:** Participate in supplier audit program including planning, execution, and follow-up. Perform on-site and remote audits of current and prospective suppliers. Work with suppliers on identified nonconformances.
This position is fully onsite, five days per week in San Jose. Travel up to 40% required for supplier audits and corrective action support.
**Requirements:**
- Bachelor's degree (or equivalent) in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Physics, or related field
- 5+ years experience in Quality Engineering, Quality Assurance, or manufacturing
- Strong working knowledge of GD&T (ASME Y14.5) and ability to read/interpret mechanical drawings and specifications
- Experience with dimensional inspection methods and equipment (calipers, micrometers, go/no-go gauges, optical/laser scanning)
- Deep knowledge of quality assurance terminology, methods, and tools
- Demonstrated knowledge of Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP), part & document control, and defect management processes
- Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills
- Proficiency with data management and reporting software, including MES & PLM
- Familiarity with aerospace industry standards such as AS9100, ISO 9001, or similar
- Experience in cleanroom manufacturing environment related to aerospace/engineering or highly regulated environment
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Willingness to travel up to 40% to supplier sites for audits, FAIs, and corrective action support
- ITAR/EAR compliance: Must be a U.S. person (citizen, national, green card holder, refugee, or asylee) or eligible to access export-controlled information
