Joby Aviation is seeking a Senior Manager of Quality Assurance to lead and scale the Quality Assurance organization as the company prepares for commercial launch of its electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft. Reporting to the Head of Quality, you will architect, maintain, and scale the overarching Quality Management System (QMS) across all manufacturing and engineering facilities in San Carlos and Marina, California.
You will drive regulatory compliance, internal and external auditing strategies, and systemic health as Joby scales aircraft production toward FAA certification and commercial service launch in the US and Dubai. This is a people-leadership role: you will build and develop a high-performing organization of Quality Assurance managers, system engineers, and lead auditors, ensuring the QMS acts as a seamless enabler of production rather than a bottleneck.
Key responsibilities include:
- Lead and scale a multi-site QA team of managers, QMS engineers, and auditors, ensuring compliance with internal standards and FAA regulations.
- Oversee development, maintenance, and continuous improvement of the AS9100 and FAA 14 CFR Part 21 compliant Quality Management System.
- Serve as the primary point of contact and management representative for external audits, FAA evaluations, and third-party registrar assessments.
- Direct the internal audit program across the enterprise, identifying compliance risks and validating control effectiveness.
- Oversee the Corrective and Preventive Action (CAPA) system, ensuring systemic issues are escalated, investigated, and permanently resolved.
- Govern the enterprise document control system and coordinate training and procedure adherence across operations.
- Facilitate executive Management Review meetings, utilizing data analytics to report on QMS health, quality objectives, and compliance trends.
- Drive digital transformation initiatives within QA (e.g., eQMS implementation) to streamline compliance tracking.
The ideal candidate possesses a proven track record of systems leadership in complex manufacturing or aviation environments, with deep expertise in quality management frameworks and regulatory compliance. You will own the integrity of the compliance framework and ensure a world-class, audit-ready quality culture as Joby scales toward commercialization.
REQUIREMENTS:
- Minimum 10 years of experience in Quality Assurance, QMS Management, or Regulatory Compliance.
- Minimum 5 years of leadership experience managing technical teams or leading large, multi-site operational organizations.
- Experience leading quality assurance operations in military aviation, commercial aerospace, or similarly regulated high-reliability environments.
- Deep expertise in AS9100, ISO9001, and FAA production regulations (e.g., Part 21).
- Bachelor's degree in engineering, technology, aviation management, or a related field (or equivalent practical experience); Master's degree preferred.
- ASQ Certified Manager of Quality/Organizational Excellence (CMQ/OE) or Certified Quality Auditor (CQA) desired.
- Lead Auditor Certification for AS9100D desired.
- Experience implementing or managing enterprise Quality Management Software (eQMS) desired.
