Join xAI's High Power Engineering team to design, commission, and maintain protection and control systems for large electrical infrastructure supporting AI compute facilities. You will own protection schemes and settings across the entire electrical system—from utility transmission interconnection through distribution, on-site generation, battery energy storage, down to medium- and low-voltage buses serving data halls and mission-critical loads.
Key responsibilities include developing protection philosophy and detailed electrical schematics (one-line, three-line, DC control, wiring diagrams, relay panel layouts); calculating and implementing protective relay settings and logic for transmission lines, buses, transformers, distribution feeders, generators, and battery storage systems; specifying relays, current/voltage transformers, trip circuits, and communications-assisted protection schemes; performing short-circuit and protective-device coordination studies with arc-flash analysis; commissioning protection systems using industry-standard test sets (Doble, Omicron); analyzing fault and disturbance records (COMTRADE) to recommend setting changes; maintaining settings databases and firmware/configuration control; integrating protection with SCADA, RTUs, and facility monitoring systems using DNP3, Modbus, IEC 61850, and IEEE C37.118 synchrophasors; supporting NERC PRC compliance testing; and working hands-on with field technicians and operators during outages and troubleshooting.
You will apply IEEE C37 standards (line, transformer, bus, generator protection), NESC, NFPA 70/70E, IEEE 1547, and IEEE 2800 as applicable. The role is based in Memphis, TN, with potential travel to other sites. xAI operates with a flat organizational structure emphasizing hands-on contribution, engineering excellence, and strong communication skills.
